He knew better than to be out at night. Knew that just before dusk was the most dangerous time. Knew it was stupid and started to walk faster. He’d forgotten how thick the fog rolled in off the river this time of year and shivered. After years of needing to be silent to stay alive, his feet landed silently on the brick sidewalk. This same need brought him out night after night.
He stopped a moment, listening intently. Had he heard something? The fog was too thick, muffling and distorting sounds until it was nearly impossible to tell. He waited only seconds more before moving on,knowing it was dangerous to stand still for very long.
Moments later, fingers curled around his arm and a hand clamped firmly over his mouth, as he was pulled into the shadows. Relief flooded through him when he recognized his friend.
“Lance!” he hissed.
Lance released him and turned him around, hands on his shoulders, holding him in place. “What are you doing out here, Justin? You know - ” Concern marked his features, pulling his brow together.
“I thought . . .”
“Stop thinking!” Lance whispered urgently. “One of these days, your thinking is going to get us killed.”
Justin shook his head. Lance didn’t get it, never had. Probably never would.“Lance, they were the same as the others. I felt - ”
A firm kiss from Lance silenced him. “Except it wasn’t them, Justin. I killed them. Remember?”
Justin shrugged out of his grasp. “A little hard for me to forget. But dammit,I felt them.” He raked his fingers through his curls.
“There were more, J. They were shielding. Do you feel me right now? They’re getting stronger, just like I am.”
Justin was quiet a minute, concentrating. He couldn’t feel Lance and he was right in front of him. When had Lance learned to shield? And how many more had he missed?
“I’d listen to your friend, Justin.”
Justin narrowed his eyes, searching for the source of the voice. He watched cautiously as the voice's owner stepped out of the fog.
“If you didn’t feel him or me, how many others have you missed?” the man continued. He indicated the shadows on the other side of Lance and Justin by tipping his head. “Did you know about the two over there? Or the two on the roof?”
Justin looked around them and swore quietly. He hadn’t. He'd made a mistake that neither one ofthem could afford to make. Mistakes like this could get them both killed.
“If you and your friend want to live, I suggest you follow me,” the stranger suggested. He didn’t wait for Justin or Lance to answer, just turned and walked into the fog again.
