As birthdays went, it wasn't much different than many others. A warm day spent at the beach with family, good friends, good food and the people he loved most. However, this one was special. This one would be the first birthday since he and Shaun had gotten together. Zach smiled and opened the back of his Jimmy, hefted a cooler and began the walk down the path to the beach.

Half way down, Gabe took the cooler from him. “Beer? I'll carry that,” Gabe informed him.

Zach smiled and surrendered the cooler. Little did Gabe know, the cooler with the beer was already at the beach with Shaun and Cody.

“So, what did my brother get you?” Gabe asked, leaning in conspiratorially.

Zach shook his head. “Nothing.”Read more... )

Zach pulled the light comforter up over Cody's shoulder and kissed his temple. "Night, Codes," he whispered against the sleeping child's hair. Cody stirred once as Zach turned the light off and left the room.

All around their apartment, Christmas decorations glittered and sparkled brightly, all leading the way further into the living room where a tall, heavily decorated tree dominated the room. Shaun was crouched in front of the tree in his bright blue fuzzy bathrobe, pushing a couple more gifts underneath its branches.

"No shaking the boxes, remember? Didn't we just get done telling Cody that?" Zach teased.Read more... )

The door snicked shut behind him and Cody dropped his backpack and keys onto the table in the hall. Alberta had been there today. Though the apartment was always kept neat, today the deep, rich wood gleamed extra bright. He kicked off his shoes into the corner and walked slowly down the hall to the living room. There, he came to an abrupt stop.

Usually his Uncle Zach was in the large, brightly lit living room sketching. Or at the very least, he would be out on the patio. Today, he was no where to be found and neither was Shaun. No. Instead, his mother, a woman he hadn't seen or spoken to in the last five years, sat on the leather sofa. She stubbed out a cigarette in the ashtray on the coffee table in front of her and stood nervously, wiping the palms of her hands on her faded jeans.

Time had not been kind to her and wrinkles had set in around her eyes, her hair was limp and lifeless. She looked like she had been beaten down by life as she tiredly sat back down.

“Cody,” she said quietly. The rest )

The sun was high overhead when Shaun opened his eyes ever so slowly and stared at the empty space next to him. A couple of pillows lay haphazardly discarded from when Zach had left. Shaun reached his hand out, touching the spot where Zach had slept, now cool to the touch, before rolling over and groaning.

“Definitely too much to drink,” he grumbled. Within moments, the rest of the night's events came back to him, worrying at him. Had he gone overboard? Had it been too much? There'd always been something between him and Zach, something he'd always pushed aside. Until now. What was so different about now?

He stood up stiffly and went inside the house to find coffee and aspirin, muttering and swearing to himself about stupid mistakes and never learning as he went. Read more... )

Shaun glanced around the studio apartment, then reluctantly back at the last of the boxes on the floor by his feet. Three years spent with Steven and it was reduced to this. Five boxes. Four already in the car, one more to go. He still had a few things left to get, but at this point, the sooner he was gone, the better.

“I'll send for the rest,” Shaun said finally.

Steven looked up from where he leaned against the wall opposite him. “Shaun, are you sure? It doesn't have to be this way,” he tried again.

Shaun lifted the box to take down to his car, suddenly grateful for the wagon. “Steven. You're the one that's not sure. I can't wait forever while you try to make up your mind.” He balanced the box on his hip and nudged the door open.

“I'm sorry, Shaun,” Steven said quietly.

Shaun juggled the box onto one arm and reached back for the door knob. He took one last look at Steven. “Yeah, me too,” he said quietly as he pulled the door closed behind him.

Spread out on the sand behind them was a red plaid flannel blanket that covered the lumps in the sand. Sweatshirt hood pulled up snuggly over his head, Cody was out like a light. Zach reached back behind them and pulled another blanket up over the small boy, effectively tucking him into a cocoon. When he was done, Zach faced the beach and the setting sun and rested his head on Shaun's shoulder.

It had been a long day, a perfect day, he thought. They'd had a picnic lunch, built sand castles and played Frisbee for the entire afternoon. Exhausted and worn out, and maybe just a little pink across the bridge of his nose, Cody had crawled onto the blanket, insisting he was just going to rest his eyes and fell asleep in spite of himself.

Now, they watched the fading sun over the water, leaned into each other for warmth in the cool night and listened to Cody's soft sighs in his sleep. Zach sighed, too, and leaned further into Shaun, smiling, hoping for many more days like this.

This was written on the premise that Shaun knew karate. I"m thinking THAT because during one of the scenes before he and Zach hooked up, he was working on his book and pacing out a fight scene and he did some basic karate steps that my son has worked on (which also leads me to think he knows the same form of karate). So yeah, this is written based off that idea. ;-)

When Zach turned his key in the lock on the apartment door, the only thing he wanted right then was a hot cup of coffee. Peace and quiet would be good, too, but he'd settle for the coffee right now. He nudged the door open and stopped, staring.

The furniture had been pushed to one side of the room and Shaun and Cody were in the center. Shaun had his karate uniform on, black belt wrapped around his waist and knotted snugly. Cody was on the floor in front of him in sweat pants, feet apart, hands just so as he tried to mimic Shaun's moves.

After a few minutes, Cody sat down and Shaun began the form again. Zach watched as Shaun went through the steps of the form, hands and feet snapping into place, the kicks a little more subdued because of the apartment. Every so often, a sharp “Hyah!” would punctuate a pivot and a kick and then Shaun's body would lock into position again. Read more... )

As Zach stared at the envelope on the table in front of him, he was glad Shaun and Cody were out for the moment, though a quick glance at the clock assured him that yes, they would be back anytime. Jeanne's small, almost illegible handwriting addressed the thick envelope to both him and Shaun. He held the envelope with one hand and tapped the fingertips of his other hand against it. He had a pretty good idea what was in there, but was he ready to see it in black and white? He didn't know.

Finally, he inhaled deeply and slid his finger under the flap, breaking the seal and pulling it open. He pulled the thick paperwork out and stared. The top sheet was a letter from Jeanne, short and to the point. He exhaled slowly and set the papers on the table top, then rested his head in his hands and closed his eyes. This was how Shaun found him a few minutes later when they got home. Read more... )

Zach pulled back from the hug Shaun held him in, but kept his hands on Shaun's hips. He just wasn't quite ready to let go yet. He'd messed up enough and had so much to make up for, including this.

“So, um, when you said anything -” Zach began. He moved his hands up and began fiddling with a couple of buttons on Shaun's shirt.

“I meant anything. What? What is it?”

Zach exhaled and pulled back a little from Shaun. “Jeanne's leaving for Oregon today.”Read more... )

450 words of Shaun and Gabe

Shaun walked slowly back into the noisy, well lit house. Behind him, he could hear Zach as he ground through the gears of his Blazer, a sure sign he was upset. Shaun closed the door and went to the kitchen to find a beer. He kept walking through the house, painfully aware that Gabe was hot on his heels as he climbed the stairs slowly. He dragged his hand lightly along the iron railing, trying not to remember that first night not so long ago.

His room was quieter than downstairs had been, but even with the door closed, he could still hear the noise. He sat on his bed and took a long pull off the beer bottle before placing it carefully on the floor. Read more... )
