chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3

“Jesus,” one of the other men whispered.

The stranger nodded.“Not many come in contact with them and live to tell about it. If you can call that living. How many were there?”

Justin kept his head down, concentrating on getting the fruit on his tray to his mouth and chewing it into itty-bitty pieces before swallowing.

Lance squeezed his thigh before answering. “Three. They were young, not very powerful yet and were just getting ready to let Justin out of the coffin they’d locked him in.”

“They had a coffin?” the second man asked, surprised.

Justin nodded, still eyeing his food. “They brought it with them, probably figured they wouldn’t be interrupted and would have all kinds of time for their games. Only they didn’t. Lance stopped them instead.”

The Stranger looked back and forth from Lance to Justin. “He’s Lance?” he asked.

Justin nodded. “That’s Lance. I’m Justin.”

“I’m Josh. This is Chris,” he paused, indicating the other man that had spoken. “And that’s Joey,” he waved his fork, pointing to the last man at the table. “Start at the beginning. What happened?”

Justin stood, ready to explore what was apparently to be his new home. Lance had never told him precisely what happened before he was let out of the coffin and he wasn’t about to listen now. He patted Lance’s shoulder as he stood, leaving them to the discussion.

Lance stared at Justin’s back as he walked to the other side of the cavern. “My apartment was on the floor above theirs. Not directly overhead, but close enough. The night that his parents were killed, I was having trouble sleeping and was dozing lightly. The screams woke me up.” He paused as a shiver rippled up his spine. “I’ve never heard anything like it and hope I never do again. By the time I figured out where they were coming from and got into the apartment, Justin was already chained inside the coffin, his mother had been tortured and drank to death and his step-dad was nearly there. The female vampire finished him off just as I got in the room.” Lance paused, remembering the flash of hope on Justin’s step-dad’s face just before he died. “It’s kind of a blur after that. All I really know is that I ended up with 3 dead vampires and 2 dead humans and Justin sobbing in my arms. His hands were a mess from trying to claw his way out of the coffin. He’s never gone back to that apartment building. The apartment is still there, but he won’t go near it.”

Chris nodded. “I don’t blame him. Where do you stay?”

Lance shrugged and turned sideways, straddling the bench. “Here and there. Killing three in one night has sort of made me a bit unpopular in their community, so we haven’t stayed still for very long. It’s safer that way.”

As though he’d figured the conversation had wandered into safer territory, Justin returned and sat in the vee of Lance’s legs, leaning back against his chest. He closed his eyes. This was the only place he truly felt safe anymore.

“Now that you know about us,” he started without opening his eyes, “What about you? What is this place? How many are down here?”

Joey smiled. “It’s on old shelter the city had. We reinforced where we needed to, Chris was able to put wards on the exterior doors and we have one of the safest shelters in the city. We’ve tapped into the city’s power grid, city plumbing for our water supply and some of the vendors above will still work with us for our other supplies. We’re very fortunate that way.”

“We average a couple dozen,” JC continued, picking up where Joey left off. “Sometimes we lose people to the vampires. Sometimes they decide to try it on their own again instead of coming back.” He paused, watching them. Justin met his gaze evenly as Lance squeezed him reassuringly with his thighs. “You’re a Hunter?” he asked Lance.

“If that’s what you call it,” Lance answered.

“And you?” he directed to Justin.

“I’m a Tracker.” Which meant that he found the vampires and Lance killed them. It usually worked out well for the both of them. Except when the vampires were stronger than he was and he doesn’t sense them – like last night.

Josh nodded at this. “Your powers work well together, then.” He leaned onto the table, bracing himself with his elbows. “What do you say we go hunting?” he asked with a devious gleam in his eye.
