Nick opened the door and blinked groggily at his younger brother.

"You look like hell," Drew declared as he shouldered his way inside.

Nick closed the door. "Hello to you too. What are you doing here so early?"

"Nick, it's two in the afternoon. You wanna tell me why Jeff is feeding the kids cereal three meals a day and you smell like you haven't showered in a month?"

"A week," Nick mumbled, though he knew Drew was right and that it wasn't really the point.

"What?"

"Nothing. Drew, what are you doing here?" he asked again.

Drew glared at his brother, then looked around the messy room with disgust before finally bringing his glare back 'round to Nick. "Look, whatever happened, fix it. You're both a mess, the kids are a mess and I'm tired of it. You both waited too long for this second chance to fuck it up, so swallow your damn pride and fix it."

Nick ran a hand through his hair and winced. Yeah, he needed a shower. "I don't know if it can be fixed," he admitted out loud for the first time.

Drew grunted. "Oh bullshit. I don't buy that for a second and neither do you. You have five minutes to get in the shower while I clean up this sty and an hour until Jeff gets here."

Nick stopped about halfway down the hall and turned back around. "Jeff? How did you manage that? Where are the kids?"

"The kids are with Lea. She's taking them to the zoo today so you and Jeff can get your act together before you go home. Go. Nick."

Moments later, Nick stood under the pounding hot spray with his eyes shut, head tilted back. Drew was right, as usual. This was fixable. It had to be, didn't it? What was it that Jeff had insisted on so long ago? That they knew what they were doing this time? Nick wasn't sure anyone ever really knew what they were doing and judging by the mess they'd made of things, he didn't think Jeff did, either. But could they fix it? Get back to where they were before? By the time he'd turned the water off and wrapped a thick towel around his hips, he'd made up his mind that he was at least going to try.

By dinner time that night, Nick was starting to doubt himself and Drew as tension filled the air and he and Jeff spent nearly the entire meal glaring at each other across the table. Finally, Drew threw his napkin onto his plate and stood up. "Fuck this shit. You two are ridiculous. Get out. Get outside right the fuck now and I'm not letting you in until you're making disgusting kissy faces at each other. Out. Go!" he told them as he herded them out the back door.

Before either of them had had a chance to react, Drew had locked the door, leaving them on the stone patio with only the lights from the house breaking the dark. Jeff took one look at Nick and stormed down the path Nick had made to the water. He waited only a moment, then followed him. "Jeff! Wait!" Nick called out to Jeff's retreating back.

He didn't catch up to Jeff until they stood at the water's edge. The cool water lapped at their feet, sending a chill through Nick, and the wind ripped at their hair, blowing the material of their clothes. There would be a storm later, Nick was sure of it.

"He's your brother, Nick. Why is he involved?" Jeff asked, finally breaking his silence. It was the first thing he'd said all evening.

"Probably because he IS my brother. Probably because we're making a mess of this and he's trying to wake us up before it's forever fucked up and he knows neither of us wants that."

"Heh. Says you," Jeff said quietly.

"Really, Jeff? You want to just walk away from anything we've had together? Built together? Just like that, it's done?" Nick asked, though the questions were as much for himself as they were for Jeff. He knew what his answer was, he just hoped Jeff's was the same.

Jeff sighed. "No, I don't. But dammit Nick -"

Nick cut him off. "No. Stop, stop there. No buts. Neither of us want to walk away from this, that's the part that counts. Right? So let's... Let's just concentrate on that. We can try to get the rest of this figured out later." He took a chance and stepped closer to Jeff and when Jeff didn't say anything, didn't back away, slid his arms around Jeff's waist. It was familiar and comfortable and what Nick would easily call home.

Jeff leaned up, kissed him. "You think we can?" he asked quietly.

Nick nodded. "I know we can," he said, his voice muffled against Jeff's chest.
