Author's Notes: Future-Schmoopy Fic. It started by accident and ended up a ficlet. Oops?
Ben pulled his car into the driveway alongside Cooper's Charger and turned the key to shut it off. There was a large shopping back on the passenger seat and he grabbed it before getting out and going inside.
As he'd expected, inside the house was cool and almost silent. The television was turned off and a couple of clean cups were in the strainer on the counter - everything else had been cleaned up and put away. Ben quietly set his keys on the counter, toed his shoes off, and then moved down the hall.
His goal was the one open doorway at the end. It opened into a cheerful, sunshine yellow bedroom with a white canopy bed in the center of the room. At its foot was an overflowing wooden toy box. In one corner, John sat in a white rocking chair, cradling his precious cargo. In his lap, a little girl was curled up, fast asleep as she clutched a soft, purple bunny. Her eyes were closed, long lashes fluttered against her cheeks, dark circles under her eyes. Tangled blond curls ringed her face as John hugged her.
Ben stood in the open doorway, leaning a shoulder against its frame and smiled as he watched. It didn't matter how many times he saw this, it still melted his heart every time, though he'd never admit it to John. The little girl John held was Emily, found abandoned on one of their calls. They'd tried to leave her with social services, but after she'd made an unlikely attachment to John, they'd begun the paperwork to first get custody and then, with any luck, adopt her. She was only four years old and had already seen so much in her short life. How anyone could have abandoned something so precious, Ben could never figure out, but he'd vowed long ago that she would never know instability again.
John looked up when Ben leaned against the frame, nodded once at Ben's raised eyebrow and Ben came into the room. He quickly kissed John, then the top of Emily's head and knelt in front of them.
"How is she?" Ben wanted to know as he smoothed her hair away from her face and felt her forehead.
John looked down at her, then at Ben. "Her fever finally broke, but she's still coughing and stuffed up. Can you take her?"
Ben nodded and carefully scooped the little girl up, cradling her gently and waited as John pulled the covers back on her bed. When John was ready, he laid her down and pulled the covers back up over her. She whimpered, rolled onto her side and went back to sleep. Ben stayed a moment to watch, reassuring himself that she was ok, relaxing when John's large hand came to rest on his hip. He bent down one more time to kiss her forehead, and then the two of them walked back into the kitchen together.
"You get the stuff?" John asked him.
Ben indicated the bag. "Yeah. Decongestant, vapor rub and a vaporizer, and all kinds of good things. You should go to bed. You look beat."
John shrugged and took a couple of beers from the fridge, opened them both and handed one to Ben. “I'm good, Boo,” he said, using Ben's old pet name. “I napped a little bit while she did.”
Ben snorted and looked at John over the top edge of the beer bottle. “Must have done wonders for your back.”
“My back is just fine,” he groused.
“Uh huh. Let me go set up the vaporizer and then you can prove it to me,” Ben teased.
