After the second night, Justin decided he’d been inside long enough and needed fresh air. It was a risk, he knew, but it was one he was willing to take. After Lance and everyone else had gone to sleep, Justin carefully slid out of bed. Just outside the regular entrance was a ladder that climbed into the basement of an abandoned building. That wasn’t news, a lot of the surface buildings in this part of town were abandoned. Stairs with a crumbled railing hugged one wall and slowly he started to climb them.

It didn’t take much to figure out that more than the railing was unsafe. Some of the steps were loose, others were coming off, and some were missing completely. A thick layer of dust and debris coated most and Justin placed his feet carefully. At the top of the stairs was a door that opened to the roof. When Justin pushed, it swung open slowly. Justin winced, waiting for squeaks from the hinges, but they never came. He waited a moment before stepping through the opening as he made sure no one else was on the rooftop.

The area was small, edged with a partial brick wall that had fallen away in places. On one whole side, it was completely missing, the bricks long ago carried off. Justin paid careful attention to his surroundings and the shadows as he walked carefully in that direction, his feet softly crunching the pebbles on the surface. He’d been caught off guard once recently and that couldn’t happen again. Not if they wanted to live.

The night was cool, the air stinging his lungs when he inhaled. He sat at the roof’s edge, crossing his legs and tucking his feet beneath him. The rooftop was dimly lit by the partially hidden moon. He sat with his eyes closed, back stiff, listening, feeling. Practicing and making perfect.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been there. Behind him, the door closed with a dull thud and Justin tensed until Lance dropped his shields.

Lance sat down next to him. “Quiet tonight.”

Justin nodded. Too quiet, but he’d take what he could get. “I felt you,” Justin said eventually. “When you came up.”

“That’s good though, right?”

Justin shrugged and pushed some pebbles and dirt around with his fingertip. “Yes and no. I knew you were there, but I didn’t know it was you. Good start, but it’s not good enough. I need to work on that.” He flicked a couple of the pebbles away. “There’s someone over there,” he whispered to Lance. “He isn’t doing anything. He’s just … watching.”

The man he was telling Lance about was on another roof, mostly hidden in shadows. He wore old jeans, sneakers and a dark tee shirt with a gash at the side. Justin couldn’t see his face in the dark. If he hadn’t moved just a little the last time the moon was uncovered, Justin may not have actually seen him at all. But he could feel him, waiting, watching.

“Should we go?” Lance asked.

Justin shook his head. “I don’t think so. It’s creepy, the way he’s watching, but he’s not doing anything.” When the man moved out of the shadows and took a few steps closer, Justin wondered if he should reconsider as a shiver crawled up his spine.

The man gasped in shock. “It can’t be you!” he hissed.

Lance raised an eyebrow at Justin in question. Justin shrugged.

“You’re supposed to be dead!” the man finished before running away.

Lance looked at Justin. “What the hell was that all about?”

But was that a good being recognized or a bad one?!?

Curious readers need to know!!!

Great as always, Den. You might want to edit your post at [livejournal.com profile] sparklydarkboys, the spacing got thrown off, but I wanted to let you know I'm still loving "Into the Mist"!

There were places where the space between two words had been removed. On my flist, your link from your LJ was first, and it was spaced fine, then your same link from SDB, and its spacing was off. I thought that was weird, myself.
