Sort of an early TrickyFish day offering. For R, who was having a bad day. Nothing but pure, unadulterated schmoop. Part of the Only Temporary 'verse. ( Part I / Part II / Part III / Part IV )

When Lance pushed open the front door, it swung in silently on its hinges. The entryway was dimly lit, as were the dining room and living room beyond. He took a single step in and sent something skittering across the floor. He looked down and found a red foil wrapped chocolate. A few feet away was another wrapped in silver foil. Then another red. There was a trail of them leading deeper into the house. Lance chuckled and followed them.
"Chris?" he called out. He wasn't really that surprised when there was no answer. Chris, evidently, had a plan. And answering was not part of it. The candy path pulled Lance further in. Each room Lance passed was equally dark, equally empty.
"Chris?" he asked again. No kids, no Chris and a trail of chocolate candies. Hmm.
When the trail finally ended, it was at the glass doors that opened out onto the stone patio. Lance nudged the door open and stepped out. A table and two chairs had been set up. On the table were place settings for two, red candles, and an ice bucket that had a bottle of wine propped in it.
"Chris?" Lance tried one last time. He sat in one of the chairs and waited, his curiosity piqued.
When Chris finally appeared, he was looking very pleased with himself, dark eyes twinkling merrily. The grin he wore reached from ear to ear. In his hands was a platter of steaming steak and vegetables.
"You found it," Chris finally said.
Lance watched as Chris placed the platter on the table and began to serve him. "It was a bit hard to miss," Lance chuckled. "What's this all about?"
Chris kissed Lance's cheek with a dramatic smacking sound. "You wound me," he teased. "Don't you remember what today is?"
Lance looked at Chris in confusion. "Today - Oh. Yeah babe, I do. Did you cook this?" Lance unfolded the red linen napkin and spread it across his lap, leaning out of Chris’s way as he placed food on the plate.
"I do have a few tricks up my sleeve, you know," Chris answered. He finished serving and leaned down, kissing Lance again. Thoroughly, this time. Slowly. "Happy Valentine's Day," he said quietly, touching his forehead to Lance's.
Lance smiled and kissed him again. "Happy Valentine's Day," he whispered in return.
