Nick stretched in the large bed and rolled onto his back in one fluid motion. The sun was just starting to push its way through the sheer curtains that hung on the windows and he fought to stay asleep, but gave up when he smelled food. He swung his legs around and sat up.
On the floor next to the bed were the most comfortable slippers he’d ever found – a pair of pink plastic stilettos with bright pink feathers around the clear vinyl strap in the back. The strap of plastic that crossed over the top of his foot was crusted with pretty white and pink rhinestones. He liked them – the feathers tickled his feet when he walked and the rhinestones looked so pretty when they caught the sun just so. He stood up, scratched under his arm and walked out to the kitchen as he followed the smell of food.
In the kitchen, he found Jeff in front of the stove. The source of the yummy smells was on the counter – a chocolate cake that was cooling in front of the window while Jeff mixed the frosting. Nick went over and dipped his finger into it, only to be rewarded with a sharp thwap on the behind as Jeff swung a wooden spoon at him, leaving behind a chocolate print.
“You have to wait,” Jeff admonished as he waggled the chocolatey spoon at him. He turned to face Nick, revealing smooth shoulders and a bare chest partly obscured by an apron that read “He didn’t marry me for my cooking.” Obnoxiously bright red lips were printed all over it. The look on Jeff’s face was just daring Nick to say something.
Nick swiped through the chocolate with the tip of his finger and then brought it too his mouth. “Party pooper,” he said, eyes never leaving Jeff’s face.
Jeff dabbed frosting on Nick’s nose and then kissed it clean. “Trust me, you’ll get your present later.”
