Nikko tugged at his tie, ignoring the amused chuckle coming from his side. He hated big events, hated the tuxes and the false show of glam that went with them. Unfortunately, now that his father had retired, the large parties and schmoozing with sponsors were a necessary part of his job.
There was another chuckle at his side and this time Nikko couldn’t ignore it. He turned and glared at the gentleman standing next to him and raised one eyebrow. “Something I can help you with, Tom?”
Tom chuckled again and took a sip of wine from the glass he held in one hand. “No no,” he finally answered. “But if you don’t leave that tie alone, all the people whose money we need may think twice before giving it to us.”
They moved through the crowd easily, pausing every so often to shake hands, say hello, greet an old acquaintance. When they finally stopped at the other side of the room, it was in front of a very bored looking Juliet. She eyed Nikko’s unkempt tie. “You look as thrilled as I am, Nikko,” she teased. “Good evening, Tom. He conned you into coming, did he?”
“He did. Something about sleeping in the garage with the dog if I didn’t. And where is your other half?”
Juliet looked over them, searching the sea of heads. “I’m not entirely sure where Vincent went. He said he was getting more wine, but that was ages ago.” She paused a moment, eyes widening in surprise. “Nikko, um…” but her voice trailed off.
Nikko turned around. What could have surprised her that much? “Calvin,” he greeted flatly. He swallowed and shook hands, made a good show of being happy to see him, and pasted on the fakest smile he’d worn in a long time. Next to him, he felt Tom tense. He didn’t know if he was grateful or going to kill her later when Juliet slipped discreetly away. It shouldn’t have been a surprise. Even though Calvin had left him and Veritas years ago, he’d continued to work in the field and running in the same circles. To say that he’d hurt Nikko badly when he’d left was probably an understatement and had left Tom to pick up the pieces. He’d been lucky, he supposed, that they hadn’t run into each other sooner. Tom flattened one hand on his lower back and Nikko was grateful for that little bit of contact.
“Nikko, you look good,” Calvin said quietly.
He was completely at ease, Nikko noticed. He also noticed the way Calvin’s hair curled around his ears, the neatly trimmed goatee, and the sparkling gold band on his ring finger. That a woman was standing next to him wearing a matching ring was a shock to Nikko.
“So do you,” he finally answered.
“Nikko, I finally found that old man your father wanted you to meet. Let’s go before we lose him in the crowd again.”
Tom to the rescue, again. Nikko nodded, allowed himself to be steered away and left a silent and baffled Calvin behind. That was in the past. They no longer worked together, had no reason to pretend they liked each other or got along or that there was anything there for them outside of work.
As they moved through the large crowd again, eyes focused on a wrinkly, bald head in front of them, Nikko took Tom’s hand in his, past firmly left behind him. Finally.
