For Calvin, the big events were part of the job, getting out and seeing people. Being seen. There was a large turn out tonight, plenty of people with itchy fingers and full checkbooks. He grabbed a pair of wine glasses from a passing waiter and handed one to the woman that stood at his side.
Siobahn was red headed with green eyes that sparkled brighter than the diamonds in the room. She wore a lovely red gown and rubies glistened at her throat and dangled from her ears. He knew she hated these events, but was grateful that she came anyway. She smiled when she took the wine from him.
“You’re looking for him, aren’t you?” she asked quietly.
Calvin had the good grace to look surprised. “Him?” he echoed.
“Him. Nikko. You never really did get over him,” she clarified.
Caught, Calvin knew. She was right and they both knew it. It had been years since he’d left Veritas, but that hadn’t soothed the ache he felt inside even as he held her at night. He finally found a familiar face in the crowd. “No, I’m not,” he answered as he began moving forward. He knew without looking that she would follow and was relieved when she took his hand in hers.
The crowd was thick, the room was large and it took Calvin and Siobahn a few minutes to cross through the sea of formally dressed people. When they did, Nikko was talking with Juliet. Another man stood at his side, someone Calvin had only seen a few times before he’d left. Calvin waited for his opening, heart in his throat. Would Nikko hate him? Would he speak to him at all?
When Nikko turned around, face carefully neutral and simply said his name in greeting like he would to anyone else, he had a feeling he had his answer. He struggled for something to say. Who knew it could still be this hard? He did his best not to let Nikko see that.
“Nikko, you look good,” he finally settled on. And he did. Nikko wore a traditional tux, tailored to fit his lean, athletic frame precisely.
“So do you,” Nikko replied after a few moments.
The man at Nikko’s side finally spoke up, much to Calvin’s relief. “Nikko, I finally found that old man your father wanted you to meet. Let’s go before we lose him in the crowd again.”
And as they walked away, Calvin knew he was where he was supposed to be. That after all those nights of wondering for so long, he knew. This was what closure felt like.
