As the World Turns / Luke-Noah / What if? / 596 words
What if Luke had said yes?
Boxes were everywhere. There was a small stack on the kitchen counter, another in the corner of the living room. Two smallish ones in the bathroom and a whole wall in the bedroom. About the only thing that had been unpacked so far were Noah's DVD collection, some mismatched bath towels, and Luke's laptop.
It had been a long day, one that they'd spent loading and unloading various boxes into Noah's truck. Noah, poor guy, had made countless trips back and forth from his truck while Luke figured out where everything went and unpacked what they'd need just for that first night. The rest could be done a little at a time over the next week or so.
Luke pulled a paper cup out of the package on the counter and filled it with water. Somewhere nearby he knew there was a bottle of Tylenol. He slid things around on the counter and finally found it half buried under a wrinkled pile of newspaper. He opened it and shook a few into his palm, swallowed a couple and them took the water and the other two to Noah. Both of them would be feeling this the next day.
He found Noah sprawled out on his bed, their bed, Luke corrected himself. His arms were folded as he used them as a pillow. His eyes were closed and Luke wondered if he was sleeping.
He took a moment to lean against the door frame and just watch, enjoying the novelty of it. For once, there'd be no sisters, brothers or parents walking in at the most inconvenient time. He could stand here and watch for as long as he wanted, or better still, he could even touch.
"Luke," Noah mumbled from the bed. "Come to bed."
Luke hesitated for a moment out of nervousness. First night away from home, first night with Noah – it was a lot all at once, but then he took a deep breath, smiled and walked slowly to the bed. Something about if he acted confident, he would be confident. He hoped. He put the cup and pills on the nightstand before sitting on the edge of the bed by Noah's hip. The bottom hem of Noah's shirt had ridden up, exposing a bit of skin. Luke reached out and slowly rubbed his fingertips over the soft skin, hoping he was hiding how much his hand was shaking. How nervous he was.
Noah's breath caught and the skin fluttered beneath his fingertips. Luke smiled. "You like that?" he asked softly.
"What do you think?" Noah looked back at Luke over his shoulder, and then slowly rolled over. "C'mere," he said, lifting his arm.
Luke stretched out next to Noah, resting his head on his stomach. Noah flattened one hand on Luke's back and slowly rubbed circles on Luke's back. Luke slid his hand over Noah's belly, stopped at the sensitive skin of his hip. He was exhausted and fading fast, but still - this was the first night in their own apartment. Shouldn't they -
"Luke?" Noah started.
"Hm?" he hummed.
"I can hear you thinking. Go to sleep."
"But Noah, our first night -"
He was cut off when Noah squeezed him affectionately. Noah chuckled then kissed his head. "Luke, we're here. We're both exhausted and we have tomorrow and every day after, if we want."
"Noah -"
Noah kissed the top of Luke's head. "Go to sleep, Luke."
"Hey, Noah?" he began, and then waited for Noah's answering hum. "I love you."
Noah squeezed him again and chuckled. "Yeah, me too."

Date: 2008-01-17 11:49 pm (UTC)I loved this:
Luke stretched out next to Noah, resting his head on his stomach. Noah flattened one hand on Luke's back and slowly rubbed circles on Luke's back. Luke slid his hand over Noah's belly, stopped at the sensitive skin of his hip. He was exhausted and fading fast, but still - this was the first night in their own apartment.
And I loved that Noah reassured poor nervous Luke at the end.
Mmmmmmm. Thank you!!! :)

Just one tiny thing:
"But Luke, our first night -"
Shouldn't that be "But Noah, our first night -"?

How sweet! It's so precise and tender, so like a glimpse of how things would be if it was real life! I'm touched :)))))
