Author's Notes:
I don't know if there is more to this or not. I don't have a clue why they are hiding or where they are going or who is after them or why. I'd like to know. I hope I'll find out. This came to me in a dream last night and while we had no power today, I wrote it up on Freddy. I'm thrilled with how it turned out, but I don't know if we'll see these two again or not. :D

***********

They'd been hidden like this for hours; long into the night, she was sure. It was a small shed with very little room, but its walls were sturdy and its roof solid. Outside, she could hear the angry footsteps of those that looked for them as they rushed by. Soon, the others would give up and they would be safe until morning.

She wrapped her arms more tightly around the sleeping form next to her. She was too frightened to sleep, but she was reassured that one of them could.

When he suddenly grew rigid and woke with a gasp of pain, she tensed and sat up.

"What is it?" she asked quietly. Surely, the footsteps outside would drown out her voice, but she couldn’t be sure, couldn’t take the chance.

Her companion looked wildly around them, as though momentarily confused. His gaze finally settled on her. "Annika?" he asked.

"Yes. We're hidden. Safe for now," she explained to him.

He shook his head and grimaced with pain. "No. Not safe," he gasped.

"Not for good, no," she agreed. "But for tonight -"

He winced in pain again and brought a large hand up to his chest. His shirt, though torn and dirty, had born the worst of the damage, they'd realized earlier as they'd searched for injuries. The skin beneath the material was miraculously still intact. Now though, he was clearly in pain.

Annika watched him, trying to hide her worry. "Stefan, tell me what is wrong," she pressed.

He winced again and pulled away the remains of his shirt. Streaking across his once smooth chest were several violent red marks. It was as though he'd been clawed. His skin had not torn, but these marks clearly pained him.

Annika brought up a hand and gently touched the edges of a mark with the barest brush of her fingertip. When Stefan inhaled sharply and stiffened, she pulled her hand back and moved her eyes to his face.

"Stefan, these marks - " she began.

He grimaced. "Not safe, never safe no matter how far we go," he said quietly before slipping back off to sleep.

Troubled, Annika pressed herself into a corner of the shed. She drew her knees up in front of her and watched him sleep as she tried not to hear the echoes of what he'd just said in her mind.
