Chapter 1

Justin stared into the hole the stranger had disappeared into. He didn’t know what was down there, but was pretty sure he didn’t want tofollow. He frowned when Lance nudged his back.

“Go, Justin,” Lance whispered.

Justin stood rooted to the spot and shook his head. He swallowed roughly. “I can’t.”

Lance’s hand was still at his back, more insistent now. “J, you have to. Go!”

Justin dropped down into the shallow hole as Lance’s nudge tipped his balance. He landed next to the stranger and waited for Lance to join him. When Lance’s hand closed around his, he relaxed. A little.

The stranger began walking further into the dimly lit tunnel, pausing only once to glance back over his shoulder.

“Come on,” he said, his voice still hushed.

Lance squeezed Justin’s hand once and began to follow. Reluctantly, Justin realized he had no choice. Into the dark or back out there, which wasn’t much of an option, really.

As they followed the stranger,Justin did anything to not think about where he was walking. Stared at the stranger’s narrow shoulders and narrower hips, the way his hair curled at the back of his neck, the feel of Lance’s hand wrapped around his. Something. Anything except the fact that he was walking in a tunnel in near darkness and going deeper into the earth. There was a reason they weren’t down here already and it wasn’t because they liked the company above them.

He paid attention to his breathing. In. Out. Slow down. Breathe deeply. In. Out. Tried not to think about the way the tunnel was now angled down sharply beneath his feet. Tried not to think about how the light bulbs that hung haphazardly from the ceiling were spaced further apart the further they walked. That with each step, it grew darker.

He sagged against the wall of the tunnel and slid down until he was nearly sitting. He wrapped his arms around his knees and tucked his head down, trying to ignore the faint echo of sound off the tunnel walls. He felt rather than heard Lance as he kneeled in front of him, one hand gently resting on Justin’s knee.

“J?” he asked quietly.

More feet scuffing against the rough floor. “What’s with him?” the stranger asked.

Justinallowed himself to be wrapped in Lance’s arms, listened to his heart,Lance’s soft whispers as they soothed him. He never knew what Lance was saying, sometimes wondered if Lance even knew, but whatever it was, it always brought him back to himself.

“He’s claustrophobic,” Lance answered in the same voice. “Ever since his parents - ” He stopped at the glare that Justin gave him.

The stranger’s voice was closer now and Justin knew he was kneeling too. “Will he be ok?”

Justin lifted his head. “I’ll be fine. Just give me a second.” He inhaled deeply, once, twice, again.

“We’re almost there. Can you make it?” the stranger asked.

Justin met the stranger’s dark blue gaze and laughed dryly. “I’ve made it this far.”

The stranger nodded, the tangle of wild curls that framed his face bouncing crazily. “Good. Let’s go,” and he held his hand out to pull Justin to his feet.
