chapter 1, chapter 2

Finally, when Justin thought he could stand it no more, the tunnel ended. In front of them was a large wooden door with an old crossimbedded in the center. The Stranger pulled a single key from hispocket and snicked it in the lock just below the cross.

“This is our emergency exit. Normally, it stays locked.” He looked at Justin over his shoulder before continuing. “They can’t get you down here. You’re safe.” The sound echoed softly in the tunnel as the lock clunked its release when the key was turned. The stranger pushed at the heavy door and it swung inward silently.

On the other side, people filled a large central cavern. Multiple doors lined two sides. Only one door was on the remaining wall. Next to where they had come in was an alcove with a kitchen area set up and half a dozen or so tables.

Justin ignored the curious glances they received from the people in the room as they were led to one of the other doors. “Quarters are down this hall,” the stranger explained as he opened the other door and continued down the corridor. “We have several spare rooms, but I imagine you’ll want to be together. Lights out is at ten; breakfast is served from six to eight.”

The stranger paused next to a room midway down the corridor. “We’ll see you then.”

The room was small, only a little bit larger than was necessary for a double bed, a dresser and a battered desk and chair. A single light sat on the corner of the desk. Justin leaned against the doorframe and waited as Lance turned the covers back on the bed and stretched out, looking at him expectantly.

Right. He was going to lie down.He was going to close his eyes. And he was not going to fall asleep. Because they were below ground. Far below ground. It didn’t matter that they were safer than they’d been since all this started. He was below ground. Justin inhaled deeply and crawled into bed next to Lance, pressing back against him. When Lance’s strong arms wrapped around him,he could almost will himself to relax. Almost, but not quite. He closed his eyes, concentrated on his breathing and listened as Lance’s breathing became softer and knew the other man had fallen asleep.

Justin knew when it was morning, even though he couldn’t see the sun. Quiet sounds of people talking and moving about came from the other side of their thin door. Lance skimmed his fingertips over Justin’s arm, and then squeezed him gently as he kissed the side of his neck.

“Did you get any sleep at all?” Lance asked, his voice thick and deep from sleep. Justin squirmed as he nuzzled the back of his neck, kissing his ticklish spot.

“A little,” Justin answered, surprising himself. He knew it wasn’t much, but at some point during the night, he had fallen asleep for a little while. He sat up and stretched.“Probably should follow the food smells, huh?” he asked.

Curious eyes followed them in the Common Area as they found the Stranger that had brought them there the night before. They were shown the carts containing food and served themselves before sitting back down at the table, waiting for the Stranger and his friends to start questioning them.

“You’re welcome to stay down here,” the Stranger began.“But we have to know you won’t have any more attacks like yesterday on the way down.”

Justin shook his head. “I can’t promise that.”

The Stranger’s eyes softened as he nodded. “Ok. What happened? To make you so scared?”

Justin looked at his breakfast tray, grateful when Lance’s hand flattened on his thigh as he answered for him. “Those things on the surface did it. A couple of years ago, they locked him in a coffin and murdered his parents as he listened to their screams. I came in just as they were going to let him out and do the same. I still don’t know how, but I managed to kill them first.”

The Space napper hit you again in the first paragraph...

Eep! Oops. :D

Might I say that I love the way Lance seems to calm the infant? God knows, someone needs to...

They're a team, but there are some ways that Lance is stronger and some that Justin is stronger. They compliment each other. :D
