Justin clung to the edge of sleep in desperation. He was sure that if he waited just another moment, the nightmare would go away and in its place would be a peaceful, happy dream. Except it didn’t. The screams got louder and sharper, the noises more distinct. He scrunched his eyes tightly shut, trying to hang on, make the dream go away, call peace to him. One last crash from somewhere nearby and he gave up with a sigh and opened his eyes. And saw more black. He felt around for a light, held back the panic as his hand met resistance. He moved his other hand until that one was stopped too.
Blind panic threatened to set in and Justin swallowed roughly, determined not to give in. He ran his hands over the rough board in front of him, felt the angles around his head. As the last remnants of sleep left him, he finally realized where he was. A coffin.
A shrill scream rang out before being abruptly cut off and Justin was filled with panic. He gasped for breaths that didn’t come, wiped sweat from his forehead even though he felt cold and fought not to pass out. Frantically, he clawed at the wood in front of him, trying in vain to dig his way out. He knew it was useless, but maybe, just maybe.
He paused for breath, inhaling quickly and concentrated on listening. There were no more screams. No more crashing. No sounds of a struggle. What he could hear, quite clearly, was a sound he was sure to never forget no matter how hard he tried – the sounds of a vampire as it fed.
He screamed and began clawing again, ignoring the sharp stabs of pain as splinters sank into his fingers. With one final push against the cover in front of him, he gave up, chest heaving from the effort, and slumped forward against the board as blackness overtook him.
********
Dimly, he was aware of strong arms supporting him as they pulled him up and out.
“Come on, J, we have to get out of here,” a deep voice murmured.
Justin opened his eyes, turned his head. “Lance?”
“Yeah. Don’t look, Justin, just – let’s go. Before more get here,” Lance said quietly as he led Justin towards the door.
Justin yanked free of Lance’s grasp. “No, I need to see.”
“Justin - ”
“Lance, don’t. I need to do this.” Justin looked around what remained of the apartment he’d shared with his parents. At the remains of the vampires that someone, presumably Lance, had killed. At the blood on the walls and soaked into the rug and the lifeless bodies of his parents. Dead eyes stared unseeing from his mother’s face. He swallowed roughly. At least his father’s face was turned away from him. Justin stepped over debris as he crossed over to his mother, knelt beside her and gently closed her eyes. He swallowed a lump in his throat as he said a silent goodbye.
“Let’s go,” he told Lance as he stood. He wiped imagined blood from his hands onto his pants. “Never again.”
Lance didn’t question, just nodded silently.

Justin sat up with a start, hands searching blindly in the dark. Relief flooded him when he found the bedside lamp and a soft glow lit the room. His breaths came quickly and he fought to bring them under control.
Beside him, Lance rolled over, rubbed his hand in slow, soothing circles on Justin’s back. “The dream again?” he asked quietly.
Justin nodded. “Yeah.” His breaths were coming slower now as Lance’s touch calmed him. He stared at the calendar on the wall opposite the bed. “A whole fucking year. Hell of an anniversary.”

Date: 2006-01-17 02:03 pm (UTC)I want more of this.
Maybe a bit about how Lance managed to fight the vamps off and get to Justin.
or why the vamps selected Justin's family, was it just random or was there a reason behind it?

Date: 2006-01-17 02:08 pm (UTC)You'll get more. Um. Not of Lance's fighting, no. The focus here was Justin's fear.
But yes, you will find out WHY Justin's family. Because no. It was not random. ;-)

Date: 2006-01-17 08:03 pm (UTC)Working on next chapter now. Started off with a bang, but it's slowing down some. I'm trying to get SOME length to the chapters, but that's like pulling teeth.
But thank you!
