When Luke got to Katie's apartment, he found the front door wide open. He stepped into the living room, which had been overtaken by boxes of various sizes. A few had been taped shut, several were still open. All were labeled in very neat, precise handwriting. In the midst of it all, Reid was carefully packing another box, a black magic marker clamped tightly between his teeth.
“What's going on?” Luke asked curiously.
Reid looked up in surprise and took the marker out of his mouth. “I'm moving.”
Luke swallowed roughly against the instant knot in his stomach. “Out?” he echoed. It hadn't been long, only a couple of weeks, but he'd thought things had been going well enough. Had he really been that wrong?
Reid smiled at him. “Relax, Luke. I'm not going anywhere,” he said as if he'd read Luke's mind. “I just thought that it was time to get out of Katie's hair and get my own place.” He closed the box and pulled the tape dispenser across the top, sealing it shut. “Do you want to see?” Reid offered.
The apartment Reid drove him to was a spacious modern studio across town. The downstairs was an open floor plan with medium stained hardwood floors. At the far end, metal stairs climbed the side wall, leading up to a balcony and a wall beyond. Luke guessed that would probably be the bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen galley was tucked under the bedroom, darker wood cabinets with black granite counter top and stainless steel appliances. The floor in the galley was a gleaming black tile. One wall was dominated by floor to ceiling windows, looking out onto one of Oakdale's main streets.
Luke walked around the space, studying everything, then turned to find Reid leaning against the kitchen's island, hands gripping the edge of the counter, watching him. “What do you think? Does it meet the Snyder approval?” he asked.
“It's gorgeous. But I'm sure you didn't have to. I don't think Katie that minded having you around,” Luke rushed.
Reid laughed. “Maybe she didn't, but I did. Apparently, I have reasons to stay in Oakdale in spite of myself – a challenging new job that I'd be a fool to walk away from. You. It's time I had my own place.” He fished around in his jeans pocket a moment and when he held out his hand again, a shiny brass key was in his palm.
“What's that?” Luke asked.
“It looks like a key,” Reid answered as if Luke had gone simple.
“I can see that. Why?”
Reid sighed in exasperation. “Look. It's yours. Now you can come over whenever you want and you don't have to wait for me if I'm at the hospital.”
Luke grinned wickedly as he walked towards Reid. “Whenever I want, huh?” Luke teased. He stopped when he reached Reid and plucked the key from his palm, swiftly pocketing it. “Thanks,” Luke said with a grin.
“Sure. You should know Noah was discharged today.”
Luke nodded once, then looked down at his feet. “Thanks,” he said quietly.
When Reid lifted his chin, looking into his eyes, Luke fought the urge to squirm. “He still hasn't talked to you?” Reid asked with concern.
Luke shook his head, worried at his bottom lip with his teeth. “No. Not a thing. He even told the nurses I'm not to come to his room, too. ”
When Reid dropped his hand and wrapped his arms around Luke's waist, Luke leaned into the hold, resting his forehead on Reid's shoulder, settling his hand on Reid's hips.
“Me either,” Reid said. “He asked for a different doctor to do his regular exams. Didn't want me near him unless it was 'absolutely necessary.' Doogie Hughes was more than happy to oblige.” He kissed Luke's hair. “Hey, listen, it will get better. You'll see. Maybe you could invite him to dinner.”
Luke backed up in surprise. “Here?”
“Here. Why not?”
Luke laughed. Where did he even begin answering that? Ex-boyfriend to the new boyfriend's for dinner. Sure. Luke pictured them sitting around the table and the awkward silence that they would have to suffer through and started laughing. When Reid looked at him in absolute confusion, he started laughing even harder.
Reid pulled back and folded his arms over his chest. “Something funny, Mr. Snyder?” he asked as he raised one eyebrow.
“You're actually suggesting inviting Noah – my ex-boyfriend – here for dinner?” Luke could tell that Reid still didn't get it. “Reid, you're my - ” And he stopped because really, he just didn't know. What was he?
The corner of Reid's mouth twitched in amusement as he followed Luke's train of thought. “I'm what, Luke?” he asked quietly as he brushed his thumb along Luke's jawline.
This. It was always this. The way he melted when Reid touched him in a way he hadn't melted with Noah in a long, long time. The way Reid's eyes saw places in him he didn't let anyone else see and yet he couldn't keep him out. Luke swallowed.
“My boyfriend,” he answered roughly.
Reid smiled brightly. “Yeah, I am. That better?”
Luke nodded as something in his chest relaxed a little with that admission. “Yeah. You'd really want me to invite him here?” Luke looked around. “You have no furniture.”
“It's being delivered tomorrow. Look, if it would make you feel better, we can invite Chris, too. Or Allison and Casey. Or all of them.”
Luke laughed. “Wow, you're all for train wrecks, aren't you?” he asked as he stood in front of the large window and faced Reid again.
“Ok, ok. Just Chris and Noah. Will that make you feel better?”
Now it was Reid's turn to approach Luke and he watched appreciatively. Reid wore a black tee shirt tucked into black jeans, slim waist cinched neatly with a black leather belt. Luke almost felt like Reid was a panther and he was the prey. “Yes, that would make me feel better.”

Luke and Reid stepped a delicate dance as they moved around each other to clear the table and put the left overs away. The sink was nearly filled with hot, soapy water when Reid hip bumped him.
“That went well, don't you think?” he asked as he slid some dirty dishes into the water.
Luke flipped the water off and picked up the sponge, then submerged his hands in the water. “It went real well. You never did tell me how you got Noah to talk to you.”
“Some things are better off left a mystery,” Reid quipped as he flicked soap suds onto the tip of Luke's nose.
Luke chuckled. “You want mystery, how about the way Chris was watching Noah tonight? He couldn't keep his eyes off of him.” When Reid didn't say anything, Luke gasped. “You dated him!” he accused.
Reid shrugged. “Briefly in college. It went very badly and we split up.”
Luke nodded knowingly. “That would explain it.”
“Explain what?”
“The animosity between you two.”
Reid dropped the damp dishtowel he'd been using to wipe dishes clean onto the counter. “There is no animosity.” When Luke glared at him, he conceded, “Ok, maybe a little. Ok, ok, a lot. Hey! You never did see the bedroom all put together,” he finished, swiftly changing the subject. “I have a very big bed. You should see it.”
Luke laughed. “Are you trying to get me in your bed, Dr. Oliver?”
“Depends. Is it working?”
Luke wrapped his arms around Reid's neck and kissed him, then touched their foreheads together. “Absolutely.”
