Ian looked down to their linked hands and gently slipped his free. Instantly, Teddy's expression started to change, his eyes grew shuttered and Ian rushed to reassure him. He touched Teddy's arm. "Relax. I'm not going anywhere." And to Ian's relief, Teddy visibly relaxed. "So what now? Did you have plans for after prom?"
"Naomi's having a party at her sister's place. You wanna come with?" Teddy offered.
Ian grinned so hard, his cheeks hurt. "Like a date? You sure you're ready for that?" he teased.
Teddy chuckled. "Navid saw us kissing and I'm still alive. I think I'll be ok. So, you coming?" he asked again.
Ian nodded. "Yeah, I'd like that."

In the parking lot, they'd each stashed spare clothes in their vehicles and quickly changed into something casual before riding in Teddy's car to the party.
For all that Teddy had put on the brave face when they were alone, arriving at Naomi's was a different matter. Cars lined the drive leading to the brightly lit house and as Teddy pulled his car behind someone's 'Vette, he'd gotten quiet again. Ian watched him carefully, but didn't say anything.
They got out of the car and stared at the brightly lit house as music poured out through the open doors and windows.
"Wow," Ian said quietly.
Teddy looked over at him. "Yeah, it's pretty nuts," he said before walking up the drive. His back was ram rod straight, shoulders set stiffly and Ian wondered if this was the most horrible idea ever.
Teddy's step slowed, then faltered just as they reached the glass doors and Ian thought maybe this was it. The moment Teddy would decide to go home. Ian stepped close and placed his hand lightly on Teddy's lower back to try to reassure him. It must have worked because Teddy relaxed under Ian's touch and went inside.
They were soon greeted by Teddy's friends and while curious glances were cast their way, no one actually said anything.
Teddy leaned against a table and Ian stood just close enough for their shoulders to almost touch as he tried to gauge what was going through Teddy's head. He seemed comfortable and laughed and joked with people for most of the evening, and even flirted with Ian a bit. After a while, Ian suddenly saw Teddy's walls go up and his expression become guarded once again. Ian followed Teddy's hard gaze to see if he could figure out what had happened.
Crossing the room was a small group of classmates that were known for being rowdy. How they'd gotten in, Ian had no idea, but he hoped they'd be leaving soon. Soon, one of them had said something loudly about “letting fags into the party” and the next thing he knew, Teddy's fist had made contact with the other guy's jaw, making a horrid crunching sound. Immediately, the other guy clutched at his face. Ian whirled to face Teddy, whose face had crumpled with pain as he clutched his hand. He gently took Teddy's hand as he carefully watched Teddy. “Let me see,” he said, turning Teddy's hand over in his. He watched with dismay as it started to bruise and swell. “What did you do that for?” Ian asked quietly as he ignored the chaos in the background from the other guy and his friends.
“They said – they....” He paused to hiss through his teeth as Ian prodded gently.
“Teddy, you can't... you can't go around throwing punches every time someone says it. Pick your battles, you know?” he said quietly. “You need to get this looked at.”
A moment later, Navid and Silver were their making worried faces at Teddy's hand. “You're going to get that looked at, right?” Silver asked him. Then she leveled her gaze steadily at Ian. “Are you going to take him?” she asked.
And then, right then, Ian knew that she knew what was going on with them. More importantly, he knew that it was ok. He doubted Teddy got that at that particular moment considering how quickly his quickly swelling and turning lovely shades of purple, but he'd be sure to make sure Teddy knew about it later.
Ian nodded. “Yeah, I'm taking him.”
“Ok. I'll walk out with you.”
The three of them walked out to Teddy's car, then Ian held his hand out. “Keys,” he told Teddy.
“I can drive,” Teddy grumbled.
Ian waggled his fingers at him. “Keys,” he repeated firmly and then with his good hand, Teddy fished them out of his pocket and dropped them into Ian's outstretched hand. He held the door open for Teddy, closing it firmly once Teddy was inside, then went around to his side to get in.
“Ian,” Silver said quietly.
“Yeah?” He paused, hand on the handle and looked back at Silver.
“Don't hurt him.”
Ian tugged the door handle and pulled the door open, then leaned on the top of the door and smiled at Silver. “Don't worry. I won't,” he promised.
