Nick opened the door and blinked groggily at his younger brother.

"You look like hell," Drew declared as he shouldered his way inside.

Nick closed the door. "Hello to you too. What are you doing here so early?"

"Nick, it's two in the afternoon. You wanna tell me why Jeff is feeding the kids cereal three meals a day and you smell like you haven't showered in a month?"Read more... )

“Nick, I - ” Jeff watched helplessly as Nick got up from the table, noisily dropped his dinner dishes into the sink, and stormed off, leaving the clean up to him.

Jeff stared at the opening to the hall where Nick had disappeared, wondering what the hell had just happened. Jeff sighed and began clearing off the rest of the supper dishes. Author's Note: This story is a continuation of Ghosts, something I wrote way back when and I just love an excuse to play in this 'verse. ;-)

Even in the middle of the night, the house was well lit. Bright moonlight poured through the windows and Nick was able to find his way to the kitchen for a drink without stubbing too many toes. He got a glass, filled it quickly and walked slowly back to the bedroom, shuffling his feet as he walked.

He stopped in the doorway to the bedroom and leaned his shoulder against the doorframe and just watched. They’d spent the whole day before just getting used to each other again, talking, touching, sometimes not doing anything at all, but definitely not shopping, so the windows were still uncovered and moonlight lit the room.

Jeff was still sleeping, his chest rising and falling shallowly. A white sheet wound loosely around his leg and continued a couple of loose twists around his torso. Nick smiled when he remembered how the sheets had gotten so tangled. Read more... )

Nick stretched in the large bed and rolled onto his back in one fluid motion. The sun was just starting to push its way through the sheer curtains that hung on the windows and he fought to stay asleep, but gave up when he smelled food. He swung his legs around and sat up.

On the floor next to the bed were the most comfortable slippers he’d ever found – a pair of pink plastic stilettos with bright pink feathers around the clear vinyl strap in the back. The strap of plastic that crossed over the top of his foot was crusted with pretty white and pink rhinestones. He liked them – the feathers tickled his feet when he walked and the rhinestones looked so pretty when they caught the sun just so. He stood up, scratched under his arm and walked out to the kitchen as he followed the smell of food.Read more... )

The long driveway meandered through an overgrown field, ending at the front of a low rambling house. It was the house’s sense of sprawl that had attracted him to it in the beginning. The side porch overlooked a narrow strip of faded green grass, which led down to the beach. The best part of all, though, was how far away from everything and everyone it was. The only sounds here were the waves crashing into the beach. No city noises. No car horns, radios blaring, or sirens wailing.

Nick tapped his fingers in a random rhythm against the steering wheel as he drove around the last bend. Before the driveway came to an end, it swept across the front of the home. He shut off the engine and sat there, relaxing and watching. The plants that grew outside the house danced gently in the breezes, swaying lightly to and fro. He smiled as the tension finally drained away. He pulled the key free of the ignition, grabbed the paper sack of perishables from the passenger seat, and got out of the car.. . . . )
